Greening the Future: Bamboo Afforestation for Climate Resilience and Livelihoods – Jubaland
Community Mobilization & Sensitization
As part of the ongoing efforts to promote sustainable environmental management and improve community livelihoods, a community mobilization and sensitization event was held today in Jubaland under the “Greening the Future” Bamboo Afforestation Initiative.
The activity brought together local community members, youth groups, women’s associations, and environmental stakeholders to discuss the vital role bamboo plays in climate resilience, income generation, and ecosystem restoration.
The mobilization session focused on:
Raising awareness on the environmental benefits of bamboo, including its ability to absorb carbon, prevent soil erosion, and restore degraded land.
Engaging communities in tree planting and afforestation efforts to increase local ownership and long-term sustainability of bamboo projects.
Linking bamboo planting to climate-resilient water resource management, emphasizing its role in protecting riverbanks, reducing flooding, and improving groundwater recharge.
Highlighting livelihood opportunities through bamboo value chains such as handicrafts, furniture, construction materials, and energy alternatives.
Through participatory discussions, community members expressed strong interest and commitment to supporting bamboo planting as a sustainable solution to both environmental challenges and economic empowerment.
This initiative represents a significant step towards building climate-resilient landscapes, creating green jobs, and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship in Jubaland.
